Understanding AI Flashcards
In 2012, I took my first step into the world of education by volunteering in primary schools. One memorable moment was when I read "The Hobbit" to a Year 6 class. I discovered a storytelling skill I didn't know I possessed, using all sorts of interesting voices and character-specific nuances to bring the story to life. The students were completely hooked, pressuring me to read more each day. Their enthusiasm and engagement not only ignited my passion for teaching but also underscored the profound impact a dedicated educator can have on young minds. This experience was pivotal in solidifying my decision to pursue a career as a primary teacher.
Fueled by this newfound passion, I was honored to be accepted into Oxford Brookes University for a postgraduate PGCE program in 2013. This opportunity allowed me to delve deeper into educational theories and methodologies, shaping my approach to creating an inclusive and effective learning environment.
During my placements, I encountered the overwhelming challenge of teaching diverse cohorts with high levels of differentiation. At one of the UK's top-ranked schools, each lesson plan had to accommodate nine different levels of instruction. This meant creating nine distinct tasks within the same lesson, tailored to students ranging from those who could barely read to those with accelerated progress beyond their expected age. Managing these varied tasks within a single lesson was a seemingly impossible demand that left little room for creativity or individualised attention. This experience was not only exhausting but also disheartening, as I witnessed talented educators struggling to meet every student's unique needs.
Starting my teaching career in UK primary schools in 2014, I quickly realised the difficulty involved in marking, grading, and tracking student progress. Each lesson often required 3-4 different levels of work, making it arduous to ensure that every student was appropriately challenged and supported. The sheer volume of administrative tasks consumed precious time that could have been spent fostering meaningful learning experiences.
In 2017, I moved to Malaysia to teach at an international school. Here, I observed a completely different educational landscape. The rigid adherence to textbook materials left little room for personalised instruction. Attempts to deviate from the curriculum were met with accusations of "victimising" less able students. As a result, more able students were left unchallenged, while less able students struggled to keep up, creating a widening gap in student performance and engagement.
These cumulative challenges sparked a deep-seated desire to find or create tools that could automate content differentiation, similar to platforms like ReadTheory. However, such comprehensive solutions were nonexistent, fueling my dream of developing an all-inclusive system that could automatically adjust difficulty, assess, and track student progress, thereby alleviating the burdens placed on teachers and enhancing the learning experience for students.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further intensified the frustrations of teaching online. With classrooms closed and digital learning becoming the norm, I realised the urgent need for effective online educational tools. Determined to overcome these obstacles, I dedicated the next three years to mastering computer programming and web development. I became proficient in Node.js with Express, enabling me to build scalable and efficient server-side applications. I harnessed the power of MongoDB for robust database management, ensuring seamless data handling and storage. By leveraging AWS EC2 instances, I learned to deploy and manage high-availability servers, ensuring that Buckland's platforms are reliable and accessible to users worldwide. Additionally, I integrated AI technologies to create intelligent features that personalise and enhance the learning experience. Through countless hours of studying and hands-on development, I equipped myself with the technical expertise necessary to build functional, engaging, and innovative websites tailored to educational needs.
In 2023, I introduced speed typing tests aimed at helping young learners and friends' children develop this crucial skill. This tool was designed to make learning typing both fun and efficient, providing instant feedback to encourage improvement.
Building on this momentum, 2024 marked the creation of what I proudly call the world's "largest" and most advanced digital flashcard system, powered by AI to facilitate English language learning with a vocabulary base of over 10,000 words. This system not only offers extensive content but also adapts to each learner's proficiency level, ensuring personalised learning experiences.
Throughout 2024, I continued to innovate by developing the world's first AI-powered spelling program and AI grammar programs. My favorite creation, the AI-powered "Co-Pilot Writing" program, offers writing assistance, marking, and feedback, all driven by advanced AI. These tools are designed to provide real-time support, making learning more interactive and responsive to individual student needs.
Additionally, I implemented data tracking through the Buckland Scale, a unique AI-powered tool that accurately assesses a student's language level across 100 distinct levels. This surpasses traditional models like CEFR, ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and Cambridge English Qualifications, offering a more granular and precise measurement of each learner's abilities, thereby enabling educators to tailor their instruction with greater confidence and insight.
Throughout the development process, I actively engaged with both teachers and students to gather comprehensive feedback, ensuring that Buckland's tools effectively addressed real-world classroom needs. I conducted regular surveys, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews with educators to understand their challenges and requirements. Students participated in beta testing sessions, providing insights into user experience and feature preferences. This collaborative approach allowed me to identify and prioritise key areas for improvement. For instance, based on teacher feedback, I enhanced the grading system to include more detailed analytics and customisable reports, making it easier to track student progress. Student input led to the addition of more interactive elements and gamification features, which significantly increased engagement and motivation. Additionally, usability testing highlighted the need for a more intuitive user interface, prompting a redesign that streamlined navigation and improved overall accessibility. These iterative refinements, driven by direct user input, ensured that Buckland's solutions were not only effective and user-friendly but also tailored to foster a more engaging and supportive learning environment.
Today, Buckland stands as a trailblaser in AI-driven education, offering an extensive suite of tools that cater to both students and educators. Our digital flashcard system and spelling programs have transformed how English is taught and learned, providing personalised experiences that adapt to each learner's needs. With features like adaptive learning paths and interactive quizzes, Buckland ensures that every student can progress at their own pace, making learning both effective and enjoyable.
With over 10,000 words integrated into our systems, Buckland ensures that students have access to a comprehensive and evolving vocabulary. The AI grammar programs and Co-Pilot Writing tools not only assist in learning but also in assessing and tracking progress, making education more effective and efficient. Educators have reported a 30% improvement in student engagement and a 25% increase in vocabulary retention since implementing Buckland's tools.
The Buckland Scale offers unparalleled precision in measuring a student's language proficiency. By encompassing 100 levels, it provides a detailed and accurate representation of each learner's abilities, enabling educators to tailor their instruction with greater confidence and insight. Unlike traditional models like CEFR, ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and Cambridge English Qualifications, the Buckland Scale allows for more nuanced assessments, ensuring that each student's unique strengths and areas for improvement are accurately identified and addressed.
"Since integrating Buckland Books into our curriculum, I've seen my students become more confident in their English skills. The personalised feedback and adaptive learning paths make a significant difference."
"Buckland's AI-powered tools have streamlined our grading process, allowing us to focus more on teaching and less on administrative tasks."
Looking ahead, I aspire to develop additional applications that further enhance the learning experience. Potential future projects include:
